In the late 1960s/early 1970s a local photographer and film maker had the foresight to film local streets and areas in Redhill and Reigate which were about to undergo change. We can identify most of the locations but would love to hear from you if you can give us any information about the buildings (many of which have now been demolished).
Some still images taken from the films appear below.
REDHILL PICTURES
These two images were filmed around Ladbroke Road looking towards Station Road, Redhill. This section of Ladbroke Road no longer exists as it now exits onto Princess Way. To the left of the first image was a fish bar, possibly "Yorkshire Fish Bar", do you remember this or any of these other buildings? Did you work at Jennings Printing works?
This is shot from the bottom of Dome Way, Redhill during the construction of the block of flats. Do you know what year they were built? Do you remember the old house, The Dome, which was demolished to make way for the flats?
This is a shot from Clarendon Road (South?) looking towards Station Road and what is now Queensway. The building on the left is marked as Court's Depository, can anyone tell me anything about this?
This shot is from a little further down Clarendon Road. On the left is the back of the Telephone Exchange. Can anyone tell me anything about the old Victorian building on the corner of Clarendon Road? Do you have any memories of the Telephone Exchange or Clarendon Road?
This is also shot in Clarendon Road looking the other direction towards Gloucester Road with St Matthews Hall and the Ex-Servicemen's Club (?) on the left and the 'new' telephone exchange in the background. Can you identify the old garage/stable in the foreground? Do you have any memories of events at St Matthew's Hall? Am I right about the Ex-Servicemen's club and telephone exchange?
This is also shot from the Clarendon Road area looking towards London Road with St Anne's in the background. I believe this was Clarendon Road South, which no longer exists (now incorporated into Queensway?). The houses on the right were Alma Villas and there were also houses on the left, I believe the building on the left is the back of the Co-op. Do you remember Clarendon Road South and the houses?
Does anyone remember Cecil Road and the Colman Institute. Do you remember the floods in Redhill and Cecil Road in the 60s?
Did you live in Lower Bridge Road - do you remember the cottages? Do you have any memories of Sincots Road?
This shot is of London Road Redhill looking north with the Co-op in the background. Can you tell me anything about these buildings?
This is also London Road looking the other direction, do you remember the pub or any of the other buildings?
London Road again, behind the hoarding is Cecil Road and on the left the Colman Institute. Can anyone identify the Victorian building in the background?
Can you identify this building? It is labelled W.V.S., London Road. Is it Reigate or Redhill?
These two shots of Station Road, Redhill are actually part of one panoramic shot on the original film - first looking down Station Road (Lloyds Bank is still at the bottom on the left) then swinging round to the left to show the Warwick Hotel. At this point Warwick Road came right down to Station Road and the Hotel stood on the corner (now Lidls?). These shots must have been taken shortly before the Warwick Hotel was demolished. Does anyone have any memories of the hotel or the shops in Station Road. Do you know what year the hotel was demolished?
This shot is of the construction of Queensway. None of these buildings is standing now. St. Anne's in the background was the last to be demolished in 1987. You may find it diffictult to locate this shot but if you were to stand in Queensway with Lidls on your right and look towards Sainsbury/Harlequin you would be roughly in the right place. Do you remember these houses or any of the buildings?
REIGATE PICTURES
There were several shots taken around what was known as the Broadway, the area north of the tunnel. Note the cedar trees which are still there outside the offices of Watson Wyatt.
There were also shots taken around the level crossing.
Looking south towards the tunnel.
Looking north from the level crossing up London Road.
