These two books are currently the only comprehensive history books on Reigate, they are both out of print but available from third party booksellers. Palgrave's "Handbook to Reigate" was first published in 1860 and includes some charming illustrations; Hooper's "Reigate its Story through the Ages" was first published in 1945, is rather old fashioned in its style but still the local history buffs' bible.
Other books relating to the area during the 2nd World War
"Coin Street Chronicles" by Gwen Southgate has kindly been recommended to us by a visitor to the Reigate History site. It tells the story of an East End girl whose school shared the buildings of Reigate County School (Reigate Sixth Form College). Geraldine Foy of the Reigate County School Old Girls Society writes, "Gwen writes vividly about her early years in the East End, and then the time she spent in the Earlswood/Merstham area in various billets. I'm sure it would be of interest to local readers". And a further recommendation by another visitor, Helen Goddard (nee Ross),
"I was fascinated to read, in this book, an account of her being taught in those caves under the front lawn whenever the air raid signal went. Those caves were forbidden territory and securely locked up in the 1950s & 60s when I was at the school, and I had had no idea that lessons were actually conducted down there during World War II. ... So full of history and beautifully written, I am delighted to see this book referred to on your website. It is one of those highly readable, cannot put it down books."
This book can be read on a Kindle as can the book by Eric Sykes and Southern England Military.
Books relating to Lady Henry Somerset much loved former resident of Reigate Priory and founder of Duxhurst village. "A Talent for Humanity" is written by local author, Ros Black and is a very readable book about Lady Henry Somerset's life. Ros has now written a second book "Duxhurst - Surrey's Lost Village" .
