Reigate & Redhill on Film 1926 - 1935

This photo has been supplied by John Finch of Reigate. It was taken in 1935 at the Jubilee Celebrations of King George V. Children from Reigate schools were enjoying a picnic in the County School Grounds (now the 6th Form College) after having watched a Punch & Judy show. If you look carefully you can see the Jubilee mugs which had been presented to the children earlier in the day. John Finch is the boy sitting with his legs crossed, wearing a cap on the far right of the photo.

This photo was taken from the corner of Holmesdale Road, looking towards London Road with the Railway pub on the right. All these buildings have now been demolished and replaced with offices. The decorations were for the Jubilee of King George V in 1935.

The Knights of Reigate Float on Reigate Heath at the start of the 1930 carnival. The float depicts Reigate Castle Gate with two knights guarding it and a cardinal. The two girls represent Miss 1885, the date of the firm's establishment, and a modern girl, Miss 1930. We do not know who the other characters are, perhaps they were friends from another entry.

Another float from a Reigate Carnival and again on Reigate Heath. This time 1928. The title on the side of the boat reads "Atlantic Mail". The 'drivers' are Mr Pring and Miss Neale.

Croydon to Paris Airways was another float entered into the 1928 Carnival. This photo was taken at the beginning of the Carnival on Reigate Heath. As with boats, aeroplanes were also a popular feature in the carnivals. In 1930 a real aeroplane performed aerobatics over Reigate Heath before landing on the Heath and joining the procession with its wings folded.

This photo of David Joseph Vincent de Paul Barry was kindly sent in by Dave Stonnard of Hardwicke Road, Reigate. Mr. Barry was his uncle by marriage. Mr Barry was the gentlemen who organised the Reigate Carnivals. He had an architects' practice in High Street, Reigate.

Many of the films in "From the Archives" originate from Wray Park Studio, 59 London Road, Reigate (now The Surrey Mirror offices). At the time the films were made it was owned by Rowland Sammes pictured here on the right. In later years his son, Mike Sammes of the Mike Sammes Singers, helped him in his shop.

A frame taken from a film entitled "Inter-School Sports, Memorial Sports Ground, Redhill". We do not know the exact date of this film, but believe it was made in the late 1920s. St. Anne's, which was demolished in 1987, can be seen clearly in the background.
